is a comprehensive study of ceramic glazes that helps people learn about what glazes are and how they work. In this 3-day, in-person workshop, we will answer all of the questions you have and smash a lot of the ceramic myths you may have been told. We
will take the mystery of materials, formulas, and firings and translate them to change your studio practice forever!
The workshop will be led by Matthew Katz, who has worked as an Artist and Ceramic Engineer for over 20 years. Matt is a co-founder of Ceramic Materials Workshop, an online teaching platform that teaches the ceramics community about glazes and clay. He uses his knowledge of art and engineering to make ceramic science understandable and accessible for people of all experience levels.
This workshop includes hands-on experiences in making glazes and alterations that will be fired and reviewed with Matt's expertise. Each participant will run 20 test tiles in a fun, Guild-collaborative atmosphere!
Registration for Guild Members has been open for the last month!

Integrate learning technical skills of throwing, handbuilding, and altering with a journey of personal discovery and artistic development. Each day will include demonstrations, slide shows, and purposeful exercises designed to fuel curiosity and foster individual exploration. The aim is to dive deep into your own creations, focusing, stretching, and expanding ideas. Bring an open mind, ready to embrace the challenge of broadening perspectives and pushing the boundaries of creativity.
This two-day intensive workshop is all about building confidence in your slab-built pottery practice. Through hands-on demos and guided making sessions, we’ll explore how to add surface interest using handmade texture stamps, how to alter and inflate slab forms to transform volume, and how to generate repeatable designs by turning clay sketches into templates.
Expect to get messy, experiment freely, and work with intention. You’ll leave with a collection of personal templates, several three-dimensional clay sketches, and the skills to continue designing, repeating, and refining your slab-built forms back in your own studio.
Bring an open mind, a dose of patience, and a sense of curiosity! This workshop is filled.

What a great workshop! Everyone loved learning so many different tools and techniques with Hayne!
In this workshop, we'll explore extruding and slab techniques for making a wide range of functional stoneware. Our approach will be mindful of letting these processes show in the work; if we keep out of clay’s way, it can reveal its essence, and the results will be fresh and lively. We’ll use unconventional forming methods and unusual approaches to surface decoration, including stencils, stretched slabs, and slip inlay. Myths will be busted and secrets revealed.
The workshop will be held 9am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday in South Berwick, Maine (with breaks for lunch). This workshop is filled!
